Community Outreach

During the 70s, Joe Jr. also served on the board of the Texas Department of Corrections. He witnessed firsthand the problems along the Texas border and realized that in order to tackle the poverty, crime and high unemployment, there needed to be investment in education.

 

L&F Distributors partnered with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund in 1994 and helped raise more than $5 million in scholarships for students in South Texas.

 

Joe Jr. gained support from community leaders and local businesses and established South Texas Academic Rising Scholars (STARS) Scholarship Fund in 2002. Since then, L&F Distributors has helped Stars Scholarship Fund disburse more than $39.5 million in more than 19,000 scholarships awarded to students in South and West Texas.
